Since its SOHO opening in September of 1986, Peter-Roberts Antiques has been respected by collectors for its outstanding assortment of eminently collectable Arts & Crafts furniture and furnishings, in particular the work of Gustav Stickley and L&JG Stickley. More recently Peter-Roberts has developed a specialization in Mid-Century Modern furniture and furniture of the Studio Movement with designers and makers such as George Nakashima and furniture by Paul Evans and Phil Powell. We also have a strong interest in vintage modern furniture of the Danish designers Finn Juhl and Hans Wegner.
We are pleased to be able to offer a very good selection of vintage modern furniture including George Nakashima furniture. George Nakashima produced some of the finest American furniture of the mid 20th century until his passing in 1990. The furniture is known for its beautiful wood, simple lines, excellent craftsmanship and dynamic forms. George Nakashima would carefully select each piece of timber to be used in his free-from edge coffee tables, dining tables and case pieces. He chose each piece of wood based on it's structural and aesthetic potential. Much of his production was from his shop in New Hope, PA with much of it being custom made orders for his large number of loyal patrons. At Peter-Roberts Antiques, we strive to bring you the best examples of his furniture that are available on the market today. If you are interested in building a collection of George Nakashima furniture, we can assist you in obtaining the best examples of his work. If you are interested in selling some George Nakashima furniture, please contact us as we are always looking to buy pieces at very competitive prices.
Gustav Stickley and his brothers produced some of the finest furniture of the American Arts & Crafts Movement at the beginning of the 20th century. We carry many fine examples of Stickley furniture and that of Charles Limbert and Roycroft. The Arts and Crafts Movement in the US ended around 1919. The Arts & Crafts period lasted a bit over twenty years and the furniture with its clean lines, honest construction and lack of ornamentation was a precursor to the modern furniture that we highly value of the 1950's, 60's and 70's . Gustav Stickley furniture was made of primarily of quartersawn white oak with special attention made to wood selection, construction details, such as through tenons and pinned joints, and the application of superior finishes. At Peter-Roberts Antiques, we strive to make available some of the best examples of Gustav Stickley and his brothers L&JG Stickley's work. We are active buyers of Stickley furniture, so please contact us should you have a piece for sale.
Some of the most sought after vintage modern furniture of the 1950's is the furniture of Finn Juhl and Hans Wegner, both well know Danish designers of what came to be known as "Danish Modern" furniture. Finn Juhl's work was representative of the organic look in Scandinavian Design. Hans Wegner is known for his many chair designs, one of which is the "Peacock Chair".
